Detroit Lions

A full scale rebuild is necessary in Detroit. The Lions have wasted the career of Matthew Stafford and it may be time to call it quits. General manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia likely need at least eight wins in 2020 to secure employment with the Lions in 2021. In the NFC North, that may be impossible for them. Detroit can start anew after 2020 by trading Stafford and other veterans after the season to acquire as many picks as possible.

In a scenario where a rebuild is in place, trading for Rosen now allows him to sit behind Stafford in 2020 and start for a team in transition in 2021. Unfortunately for Rosen, this situation would put him exactly where he was in 2019 when he was the young quarterback that Miami took a chance on while they were “tanking”.

When Quinn and Patricia are inevitably fired, the Lions will have to start from scratch similar to what the Dolphins did last year and what the Panthers and Jaguars are doing in 2020. Selling off veterans like Stafford and taking a chance on Rosen for a low price presents the Lions with a win win scenario. If Josh Rosen plays well in 2021 they can extend him and begin to build around him. If he is awful like he has shown thus far in his career, they are in prime position for a high draft pick.

A move for Rosen is a move for next year in Detroit. Stafford still has far too much dead cap on his contract to move him now. While Josh Rosen may want to start in 2020, it may be impossible after two NFL teams have already decided that he just simply isn’t good enough to be a legitimate NFL starter.
